Equal Opportunity Employer

The City of Charleston will not discriminate in its hiring practices on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, political affiliation, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, disability, or other non-job-related factors, except where such factors constitute a bona fide occupational qualification. Charleston is an equal opportunity employer hiring those persons whose qualifications best correspond to those of the position being filled. Equal employment opportunity will be practiced in related activities pertaining to applicants and employees who will be judged on their individual merit and relevant qualifications in a fair and equitable manner.

For all applications, the City of Charleston utilizes an online application system. Applications can be found on our employment opportunities page. To apply, you will need an active e-mail account and access to the internet. If you do not have access to the internet, free internet access is available at the Charleston Carnegie Library, 712 6th Street. After submitting an application, you will receive an e-mail confirming receipt of your application. If you do not receive this confirmation or you need special accommodations when applying, please contact the Director of  Human Resources at (217)345-5650. Once we have received your application, we will be contacting you at the e-mail address you provided as to the status of your application.

Before you begin, you may find it helpful to collect your education and employment history, as you will be asked to provide this information on the application. You may save your application at various stages of the process, but it is VERY important that you answer all the application questions; incomplete applications will be rejected. You may also upload your resume and other materials as attached documents.

Please Note: Application packets for an entry-level police officer, firefighter-paramedic, and experienced police officer are not included in the online application process. Please go to the police and fire applications link below and complete the application packet in its entirety and return the packet either by mail or hand-deliver the application packet with all supporting documents attached to City Hall, Attn: Tabatha Ferguson, 520 Jackson Avenue, Charleston, IL 61920. All application questions must be answered, all question boxes marked, and the required documents must be attached. Per the Rules and Regulations of the Charleston Fire & Police Board, the application packet is considered incomplete without this information and will be rejected or returned. If you have any questions regarding the testing process, please contact Tabatha Ferguson at 217-345-8454.
