Property Maintenance and Code Enforcement (217) 345-8460

The department is responsible for the enforcement of the City of Charleston City Code, usually concerning building codes, health, life safety, building maintenance and zoning regulations.  The City has adopted the 2009 International Property Maintenance Code.  The most common violations involve, but are not limited to:

  • Yard maintenance and overgrown weeds and trash,
  • Abandoned and inoperable vehicles, boats, trailers, etc.
  • Oversized vehicle parking in residential areas,
  • Construction before obtaining Zoning approval and Building permits,
  • Minimum Housing and Building Maintenance Standards.

When calling in a complaint, you will need to provide the location and a brief description of the suspected Code Violation.  You may also lodge a complaint anonymously and still be assured that all requests are tracked and investigated individually even though there can be no follow-up with you on the disposition of the case.   There can be no action taken by the Code Enforcement Department if the complaint involves Deed Restrictions or Home Owners Association Rules and Regulations since those are considered Civil matters.

The City of Charleston uses the following Property Maintenance Codes:

  • 2009 International Property Maintenance Code
  • City of Charleston Unified Development Code
  • City of Charleston City Code
